Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh, North Carolina, the historic capital city, abounds with towering oak trees, earning it the nickname "City of Oaks".  Raleigh comprises nearly 116 square miles, the majority of which are within Wake County.  A small portion of Raleigh extends into Durham County, its neighbor to the north.  Raleigh's population at the time of the 2000 Census was 276,093; however, early 2008 estimates place the population over 374,000.

Raleigh is the seat of Wake County, and along with Chapel Hill and Durham, completes the renowned Research Triangle.  This bustling pro-business region is the site of Research Triangle Park, where companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and IBM are among the numerous firms providing employment to the area.  Raleigh also acts as a vital retail shipping point for eastern NC, while the grocery industry looks to Raleigh as a significant point of wholesale distribution.  Alcatel-Lucent, Progress Energy, and Wake County Public School System are among Raleigh's top employers.

Raleigh occupies a centralized location on the Mid-Atlantic coast, where the modern infrastructure affords many strategic business advantages.  NC's massive network of interstates and highways place Raleigh within two days drive of 60% of the country's industrial base, while major seaports are less than three hours away.  In addition, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport offers commercial and private flights, with nine major airlines and sixteen regional carriers.

The Triangle region claims one of the nation's most skilled and highly educated labor forces, where more than 33% of the population over the age of 25 hold a bachelor's degree or higher.  The Research Triangle also boasts an impressive selection of higher education facilities with diverse curriculum and programs available.  Higher learning facilities in Raleigh include Meredith College, Peace College, North Carolina State University, Shaw University, and Wake Technical Community College.

A prime location affords residents and visitors easy access to pristine beaches and mountain getaways, while a blend of historic charm and cosmopolitan flair describe the sites and activities available in NC's beautiful capital city.  Raleigh boasts a vibrant art scene, where one may enjoy performances by the Carolina Ballet or North Carolina Symphony, while history buffs have several fascinating museums such as Exploris, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and Raleigh City Museum

Outdoor enthusiasts may appreciate sites such as Falls Lake, and a wealth of lush parkland, some of which contain public recreational facilities.  Sports enthusiasts enjoy several world-class golfing greens in this Triangle region which proudly hosts the PGA Nationwide Tour Rex Hospital Open.  All this, plus a full season of exciting events put on by the Carolina Hurricanes, Carolina Rollergirls, and North Carolina Tigers.

Raleigh, North Carolina offers an enviable quality of life, which repeatedly earns the distinction of the #1 Place to Live and Work in America by Forbes.com and Money Magazine.  A fine balance of Southern charm and cutting-edge culture make Raleigh an irresistible vacation destination, while the business friendly atmosphere, low crime, and outstanding educational opportunities make the "City of Oaks" an enviable place to call home.
